Interoperability of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) in accordance with IEC 61850
New power or transformer stations increasingly rely on devices compatible with the IEC 61850 standard. Modern systems satisfying this new communication standard are also implemented whenever obsolete or defective control and management systems are replaced. The use of devices compatible with the IEC 61850 standard within a power or transformer station presents a challenge to many system integrators. While interoperability is ensured when the devices used are all made by the same manufacturer, system integrators may have to fall back on devices from different manufacturers that offer better or extended functions. However, in this case there is no guarantee of the interoperability of the devices made by different manufacturers.
The ICE 61850 is an extensive standard. The conformity of a device according the IEC 61850 does not necessarily imply the interoperability with devices from different manufacturers. How can we determine which of the devices made by different manufacturers offer interoperability? Is it best to rely on the information provided by the manufacturer? Do manufacturers provide such information in the first place? Who helps in case of interoperability problems between devices supplied by various manufacturers?
