TÜV SÜD provided certification in accordance with its "Energy and Media Efficiency, Environmental sustainability (EME)" standard for KRONES AG's enviro programme.
Manufacturers and operators of machinery and equipment for the beverage industry must adopt a highly comprehensive approach to energy and media efficiency – from the selection of raw materials, auxiliaries and operating materials to improved water cycle management, wastewater treatment and the design of disinfection systems. Reasonable standards for operation and design processes, such as TÜV SÜD's "Energy and Media efficiency, Environmental sustainability – EME" standard are in high demand.
TÜV SÜD Industrie Service issued a management system certificate for enviro, the management system developed by KRONES AG, one of the leading manufacturers of filling and packaging equipment for the beverage industry. The company can thus provide third-party confirmation that equipment sold under the "enviro" name is developed to meet very strict efficiency requirements.
Resource-efficient and environmentally safe
To meet the strict requirements, KRONES AG aligned its production and manufacturing processes to the EME standard. To this end, for example, the company had to make sure that the principles of energy and resource efficiency and environmental safety were firmly anchored in the company. In working groups and team work, KRONES developed and established framework conditions that permit its employees to develop and produce all equipment in compliance with the efficiency criteria of the EME standard.
To do so, developers and designers must keep pace with and document the state of the art at all times. They must also provide evidence of regular attendance to seminars and training courses. Another objective is to reduce the use of media, i.e. water, cleaning and disinfection agents, other raw materials, and auxiliaries and operating materials as far as possible and use environmentally safe substances. In final measurements and tests of energy and media efficiency Krones' in-house Measurement Team then ensures that the finished equipment complies with the enviro standard.
"TÜV SÜD's management system certificate provides independent confirmation that we design and develop efficient and sustainable production equipment with the help of our enviro programme", says Dr Sven Fischer responsible for aseptics and processing technology in the R & D department. This also benefits Krones' customers. "The enviro programme ensures highly transparent documentation of the energy and media use of equipment, as the EME standard requires that we determine and identify the consumption of energy, media and materials used in various modes of operation."
