Industrial diesel and gas engines
Industrial diesel and gas engines are the centrepieces of a wide variety of equipment, including emergency power supply units, combined heat and power plants (CHPs), rail vehicles, construction machinery and ships or boats. Given this, engine malfunctions or even defects can be both annoying and expensive. The root causes of malfunctions and defects can be found in engine design, dimensioning and manufacturing, but also in engine quality and operation. Therefore, rely on TÜV SÜD's in-depth expertise in all matters related to engines and equipment right from the outset. Our experts provide support all over the world and throughout the life cycle of your diesel- or gas-powered equipment.
New power generating systems
In new emergency generators or CHPs, various components such as clutch mechanisms, generators and heat exchangers, are combined with reciprocating engines. For the equipment to operate at full capacity throughout its life cycle, these components need to be perfectly aligned to each other and require high-quality connections. But this is not all. Manufacturers also need to obtain a range of regulatory permits and submit proof of capacity. A complex process, in which it is easy to lose track. However, if permits are applied for too late, placing into service of the emergency power units or CHPs may be severely delayed.
Are you planning to acquire or design an emergency power unit or CHP? If so, we will be happy to support you right from the initial planning stage by assisting you with the design, obtaining the necessary permits and developing a servicing and inspection concept. We will also be at your side during the final approval and commissioning of your Equipment.
Support for manufacturers of diesel and gas engines or powertrains
Modern diesel and gas engines are made up of an array of heavy-duty components. As demands such as downsizing, reduction in fuel consumption and emission restrictions become ever more advanced, engines and components are exposed to increasing loads. Equipment and vehicles powered by diesel and gas engines are no exception; they too bear the brunt of higher loads. To make matters worse, the approval procedures for both the engines and the equipment and vehicles powered by them are increasing in complexity.
Are you a manufacturer of diesel or gas engines, or of equipment or vehicles powered by such engines? Are you seeking support with design, application, qualification/certification, quality assurance or customer complaints? If your answer to the above questions is yes, we will be happy to support you by providing our know-how in engine technology and our services as third-party expert/inspector.
Third-Party Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA)
Defects or failure in industrial diesel and gas engines or the equipment and vehicles powered by them are expensive enough in themselves. However, in most cases the loss caused by equipment or vehicle downtime is even more costly. The root cause of engine failure can be in the design, application or manufacturing of the system as well as in its operation or maintenance. Impending failures often announce themselves some time in advance of the actual failure. However, since these indications are difficult to identify, they are frequently overlooked.
Are you dissatisfied with the operation of your engine/equipment, or have you even experienced engine failure? We will be at your side as third-party expert/inspector. We review your design, operational parameters and servicing concept, helping your equipment to run smoothly and reliably. In case of defects or failure, we provide third-party failure analysis.
Purchase/sale of engine-powered equipment
Like car buyers, purchasers of engine-powered second-hand equipment are interested in the condition of the equipment they intend to buy. Often, this condition is easy to determine by inspecting the equipment and reviewing the equipment, operation and service documentations.
Do you intend to sell your equipment/vehicle or purchase a second-hand item of equipment or vehicle? If so, we will be happy to provide third-party evaluation of the equipment or vehicle condition.
