TÜV SÜD Industrie Service verified the carbon footprint and carbon offsetting measures of Vattenfall Europe Sales.
Companies are increasingly using their carbon footprint to cut costs and enhance their reputation. By making targeted carbon savings and offsetting unavoidable carbon emissions by buying emission credits, companies actively take responsibility for sustainable management while strengthening their competitive positions at the same time.
TÜV SÜD Industrie Service carried out re-certification of the carbon footprint and carbon offsetting measures at Vattenfall Europe Sales GmbH, Hamburg, Germany. The energy service provider was awarded TÜV SÜD's "Carbon Neutral" certificate in 2010. Vattenfall Europe Sales is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Vattenfall Europe AG, Berlin, Germany, and responsible for the sales and distribution of the energy products of its parent company. Vattenfall is one of Germany's largest energy suppliers.
Carbon Footprint – Making sure it's the right fit
Vattenfall Europe Sales recorded and quantified all greenhouse gas emissions caused by its internal business processes. The company did so in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and ISO 14064, which has become established as a standard for corporate carbon footprints. In the audit, the TÜV SÜD auditors verify all direct and indirect emissions caused within the scope of organising the sales and delivery of electricity, heat or gas. This particularly concerns business and office operations, including the company's vehicle fleet, electricity, heating, air-conditioning and ventilation for the operation of office buildings, sales materials and business equipment. In addition, special emissions including travel activities by employees were included.
Evidence of carbon neutrality
Vattenfall Europe Sales compensated for all the above greenhouse gas emissions by purchasing verified emission reductions (VERs). They originate from a Brazil hydropower station registered under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol that fulfils the criteria of TÜV SÜD's "Carbon Neutral" standard. Given this, the TÜV SÜD experts were able to validate not only the greenhouse gas accounting set up by Vattenfall Europe Sales, but also their carbon offsetting measures. Renewal of TÜV SÜD's carbon neutral certificate, first issued in 2010, was thus successfully completed.
Martin Mittelstedt, Project Manager at Vattenfall Europe Sales, says, "Carbon accounting not only provided us with clarity about the actual emissions, but also enabled us to identify potential areas for further reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency. Carbon offsetting and certification by TÜV SÜD prove that we act in a responsible and sustainable manner."
