Periodical technical inspection
What does the periodical technical inspection (PTI) cost?
What else do you need to bear in mind when you come for the PTI?
Please also make sure that you have your warning triangle and first-aid kit ready. PS: Our PTI checklists summarize all the items that you can check yourself before the PTI.
How can you pay?
We accept cash and German debit cards. No credit card payments are accepted. At small test centers, there might be restrictions on payment by debit card.
Can you pay on account?
Payment on account is only possible for business customers who have a customer number with us.
Do you need an appointment?
Having an appointment helps you to avoid waiting times and to improve your planning; however, an appointment is not essential.
Does the registered keeper have to appear in person?
No, we only require the vehicle registration certificate (registration certificate, part I) and any add-on confirmations or general operating permits you happen to have. You do not need to bring a power of attorney from the registered keeper.
What tolerance is there for exceeding the PTI deadline?
There isn't any. The following applies to automobiles and motorcycles: the PTI is always due 24 months after the last inspection date. If your inspection plate expired more than two months ago, we have to conduct an in-depth inspection for which we take an additional charge of 20 percent. The inspection will not be backdated.
You can expect a fine or even a penalty and points if you are stopped in a traffic check and your inspection plate expired more than two months previously. It is also critical to be involved in an accident with an expired PTI plate. In this case, you can be penalized by your insurance company.
By the way: We will be happy to send you a reminder when your next PTI is due – a convenient reminder service is available online free of charge.
Your vehicle has been deregistered, the PTI is due and you want to reregister your vehicle. What do you need to bear in mind?
If the vehicle has not been off the road for more than one year and you still have a registration plate: You require the insurance number (electronic certificate of insurance (eBV) number) so that you will be covered to drive to the PTI. Then you can register the vehicle again with the registration authority.
If the vehicle has been off the road for more than one year: The registration plate will have expired, meaning that you will have to go to the registration authority to start the registration procedure before the PTI. To do this, you also need the electronic certificate of insurance (eBV) number as well as your vehicle documents (registration certificate, parts I and II). Then you will be given a new registration number by the registration authority. With this, you can drive to us and have the PTI carried out. After that, you can complete the registration procedure with the certificate that your vehicle has passed the PTI.
Periodical technical inspection for Caravans
What do you have to bear in mind if you bring a mobile home to the PTI and gas test (checking the gas system for leaks)?
The gas test must be carried out every two years, and represents a prerequisite for the PTI plate to be issued. Please check in advance that the components subject to mandatory renewal within ten years (gas regulator, gas hoses, shut-off cocks) have already been renewed if necessary; in this way, you will be able to complete the gas test and thus also the PTI without delays.
Furthermore, we require the initial certification booklet from the manufacturer; the gas bottle should be filled. In other respects, the requirements are the same as for a passenger car: Please bring your vehicle registration certificate along, and don't forget the warning triangle and first-aid kit either.
What do you have to bear in mind if you bring a caravan to the PTI?
In caravans, there is no link-up between the gas test and issue of the PTI plate. However, if a gas system is installed, the gas test must also be carried out within the deadline. For safety reasons, many camp sites require a gas test certificate to be presented as a precondition for entry.
Periodical Technical Inspection for trailers
Is the trailer allowed to be carrying a load when you come to the PTI?
Yes, there is no need to empty the trailer when you come to the PTI.
Entries and tuning
Do you have questions about entries and tuning?
It is difficult to provide general answers. However, feel free to contact us in person. You can find the addresses online. In any event, we will need the vehicle documents in order to provide you with information.
Test report and vehicle registration certificate
Do you always need to keep the test report in the automobile?
No, you do not always need to have the PTI test report in the automobile. You must keep the test report until the next PTI, and you must be able to produce it on demand. This can also be done subsequently.
You have lost your test report – what can you do?
If you have had the PTI carried out in one of our service centers, you can request a duplicate. The duplicate is only allowed to be issued to the registered keeper (by post or e-mail) who also applied to have the inspection performed. If the registered keeper has changed in the meantime, we require a power of attorney from the original keeper, or the purchase contract, as evidence. There is no need for evidence to be provided if the duplicate is going to be sent directly to the responsible registration authority.
You have lost your vehicle registration certificate – what can you do?
You cannot have the PTI carried out unless you first request the registration authority to issue a new vehicle registration certificate (registration certificate, part I); presenting the ownership certificate (registration certificate, part II) is not sufficient for a registered vehicle.
