New "Classification and Labelling of Substances" System
GHS "Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling“ – Reap the benefits
On 20th January 2009, the UN’s GHS system has been applied also in Europe. The EU GHS-Regulation has come into force.
The GHS aims not only at standardization, but also at harmonization of the laws on transport and dangerous goods, the handling of dangerous goods, occupational health and safety, environmental protection and consumer protection – areas that have previously been regulated separately. GHS implementation therefore requires a systematic approach.
The conversion of classification and labelling to GHS represents a further part of the new European Chemicals legislation . The new GHS regulation replaces the classification and labelling system as per the hazardous substances and dangerous preparations directives. From now on, substances and mixtures (referred to prior to GHS as “preparations“) must be re-classified and their labelling changed.
In many cases, particularly in cases involving more complex assessments (toxicology, ecotoxicology), the GHS regulation explicitly provides for expert judgements. | |

The regulation provides for the following transitional arrangements, which are currently applicable:
- Substances: 01st December 2010
- Mixtures: 01st June 2015
