The Medical-Psychological Assessment - Your Opportunity

Life is full of surprises.

Did you run a red light? Did you underestimate your blood alcohol level? Were you caught driving under the influence of drugs? All of the above are prohibited in road traffic -- but they may happen. The consequences are getting penalty points or having your driving licence revoked.

Your position is thus: if the driver and vehicle licensing agency is unsure whether a road user, i.e. a licence holder or a licence applicant, is fit to drive, it will demand a medical-psychological assessment .
This means that facts give rise to reasonable doubts about the licence holder's or applicant's physical, psychological or social ability to drive are already known. These facts may concern one of the incidents above, or relate to illness or other aspects of traffic behaviour.

But now you can count on our support: TÜV SÜD MPI - your medical-psychological institute. A reliable, strong partner that gives you the chance to safely regain your driving licence.

A medical-psychological assessment may be ordered in case of:
· Concerns relating to the physical or psychological fitness of the licence applicant.
· Repeated or serious traffic offences.
· Application for driving licence renewal after disqualification on the basis of penalty points.
· Traffic-related criminal offences or high aggression potential.
· Serious problems in the driving test.
· Application for driving licence renewal after repeated disqualifications.
· Repeated offences in the probation period following driving licence renewal after disqualification.
· A decision as to whether an exemption can be made from the minimum age limits.

A medical-psychological assessment report is required in the following cases:
· The driver has displayed signs of alcohol abuse.
· The driver has committed repeated traffic violations under the influence of alcohol.
· After disqualification for driving with a blood alcohol level of 1.6 ‰ and more.
· After disqualification for driving under the influence of legal or illegal drugs.

Private and confidential.

Our medical-psychological assessment (MPU) offers you a golden opportunity. Our assessment report forms the basis of the driver and vehicle licensing agency's decision on your continued fitness to drive.
The medical check performed within the scope of the medical-psychological assessment is similar to a health check carried out by your GP. The physician will ask you whether you suffer from any diseases and carry out a physical examination.

This medical check serves both your own health and road safety. After all, we’re sure you want to be healthy and completely fit when you drive again - without any physical restrictions.

In the psychological assessment we work with you to investigate the process and causes behind your violations. Thus we learn what triggered the violations and give advice how to react with more foresight in similar situations in future - or avoid them completely. This will also raise your awareness of your own responses - improving self-assessment and preventing mistakes.

Our psychologists know that many people are extremely nervous and agitated during the assessment, and deal considerately with every one of them. Consideration is also the watchword during reaction and concentration testing with our user-friendly test equipment.

How to act during or before the medical-psychological assessment

· Try to find out what lies at the roots of your driving licence problems.
· Feel free to make notes of any questions you may have.
· Bring along all documents and certificates (attendance at counselling and therapy sessions etc.), so that   you can prove you have already taken steps to bring about changes.
· Stay calm if you have to wait a little before the assessment
· If you suffer from "stage fright" or exam nerves, remember that the majority of assessed drivers pass the medical-psychological assessment and are diagnosed fit to drive.
· Better tell the truth, and avoid getting entangled in contradictions later on.
· We offer the assistance of a certified interpreter to foreign citizens with insufficient command of German.
