TÜV SÜD recognized as certification body for biofuels (01.03.2010)

  1. In future, all companies placing biofuels on the European market must meet the statutory sustainability standards. Germany is the first EU country to introduce a certification instrument for this purpose. TÜV SÜD has now received preliminary authorization as a Certification Body from the German Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung, BLE), enabling the company to provide certification of the production conformity of liquid biofuels and other bioliquids with the Biomass Sustainability Ordinance.

Artificial Co-Pilot: Research to assist drivers (01.03.2010)

  1. Will every driver soon be accompanied by an electronic co-pilot able to intervene directly in the driving process? Where are the limits of driver assistance systems?   1. TÜV Hanse opened its first charging station for electric cars in Hamburg on Wednesday, 24 February, to launch an electromobility pilot project. TÜV Hanse's partners in the project are its parent company TÜV SÜD, energy supplier RWE and entrepreneur Sirri Karabag, who is currently engaged in one of Germany's largest e-fleet projects.

  1. Double anniversary: The 10th TÜV SÜD crash.tech Congress, held as part of the 20th Auto Mobil International (AMI) trade show in Leipzig, focuses in depth on the topic of vehicle safety in the year 2020. At the specialist congress, held on 13 and 14 April, themes will include the latest findings in accident research and pedestrian protection, aspects of experimental testing and simulation, and – a current hot topic – the safety of electric vehicles.

TÜV SÜD Akademie strengthens its management team and drives ahead global activities (18.02.2010)

  1. TÜV SÜD Akademie GmbH has reinforced its management team, adding Jörg Schemat as Managing Director. Schemat, who joined TÜV SÜD in 1997 and whose last position was Commercial Manager of TÜV SÜD Akademie, will work beside Kai Probst, who will become Chief Executive Officer (CEO). TÜV SÜD unveils certification mark dedicated to the global footwear industry (17.02.2010)

The “TÜV SÜD Footwear Mark” addresses the industry’s concern for safeguarding the chemical safety of footwear. TÜV Hanse approves electric fleet for road traffic (22.12.2009)

  1. Today, TÜV Hanse inspected the first of a total of 700 electric cars and thus launched one of the biggest electric fleet projects in Germany ever. After final approval testing in the Service Center at Ausschläger Weg 100, the Karabag 500 Elektrik was approved for road traffic by the city of Hamburg. The project initiator was Sirri Karabag, a Fiat commercial vehicle dealer. He has the vehicles, which are based on Fiat commercial vehicles and the Fiat 500 model, converted in Italy and then imports them onto the German market. TÜV Hanse, a TÜV SÜD subsidiary, is responsible for the technical approval of the vehicles.

TÜV SÜD: car scrapping scheme has not improved road safety so far (17.12.2009)

  1. Winners are Porsche 911 and Mazda 2, rate of defects up by one per cent to 17.6 per cent – these are the most important results of the Auto Bild TÜV Report 2010, which was presented to the public at a press conference in Berlin on 17 December. TÜV SÜD, the largest German TÜV organization, contributed over 4.2 million data records. A cause of concern is that around nine million older cars with significant deficiencies are driving on German roads. So far, this trend has not been reversed by the incentive to consumers to benefit from the car-scrapping scheme and buy a new car.

  1. In 2009, international service corporation TÜV SÜD AG increased its sales revenue to EUR 1.4 billion (from EUR 1.36 billion in 2008). The number of staff increased by 700 to reach 14,860. TÜVTURK completes 5 millionth vehicle inspection (03.11.2009)

Only 21 months after taking up operation, TÜVTURK, the only organization approved to carry out regular vehicle inspections in Turkey, has now completed its 5 millionth vehicle inspection at the test station in Bolu.   1. International testing and certification corporation TÜV SÜD has acquired the leading Korean nuclear service provider GNEC. The contract was signed in Seoul on 29 October 2009. TÜV SÜD GNEC will support Korea's ambitious power plant programme from planning and licensing to plant construction and operation. The new company will combine comprehensive expertise with global experience and an excellent global network of experts.

Under Secretary of State Eck launches computer-based theory test (27.10.2009)

  1. On Friday 23 October, the new Under Secretary of State Gerhard Eck gave the starting signal for the computer-based driving theory test in Bavaria in TÜV SÜD's Unterhaching branch. On this occasion, Eck underlined the positive effect that the new test will have for road safety in Bavaria. Following an extensive pilot phase, TÜV SÜD will now gradually change over to computer-based theory tests.

TÜV SÜD tests amusement parks for child-friendliness and safety (01.10.2009)

  1. Munich. TÜV SÜD now awards the "Fit for Kids" certificate to child-friendly and safe leisure facilities, highlighting amusement parks that are particularly suitable for a family fun day out. The test criteria applied by TÜV SÜD comprise far more than the technical safety of amusement rides and play facilities. Staff qualifications and child-friendly restaurants are only some examples of the criteria included in the comprehensive standard.

In time for the IAA, the international automobile show, TÜV SÜD announces its first evaluations of the results of roadworthiness testing for electronic vehicle systems which became compulsory in April this year for all new vehicles built later than 2006. The company concluded that while electronic systems in new cars are generally in good condition, problems are caused by airbags, ESP and environmentally-relevant instrumentation. What is more, the frequency of faults increases as cars get older. Roadworthiness testing of the future is also a topic at TÜV SÜD's premiere at the IAA. Under the heading of "Discover Diversity, Enhance Efficiency", TÜV SÜD will present its mobility services at the exhibition from 17 to 27 September in Hall 8, Stand 13A.

A.T.U relies on third-party repair-shop testing provided by TÜV SÜD to ensure the continuous improvement of its branches in both disciplines. In 2009, 333 A.T.U. branches throughout Germany underwent quality testing in the form of a mystery check carried out by TÜV SÜD experts. The three best branches have now been presented with the TÜV SÜD Award for Service Quality. The award ceremony took place on 17 September within the scope of TÜV SÜD's premiere at the IAA.

E-mobility: TÜV SÜD turns focus to battery safety (16.09.2009)

  1. According to TÜV SÜD, internationally binding safety standards are urgently needed to ensure safe electric mobility. This applies in particular because lithium-ion batteries, a key component of future drive systems from all manufacturers, involve high risk potential in the areas of functional, electrical, chemical and mechanical safety. These risks are not adequately addressed by current test standards, emphasized TÜV SÜD President and CEO Dr Axel Stepken at a press conference held on Wednesday morning (16 September) at the IAA in Frankfurt. Dr Stepken also announced that TÜV SÜD will carry out the first crash tests with lithium-ion car batteries as early as this autumn.

  1. Changed statutory requirements will apply to medical devices in the future. From 21 March 2010 on, the requirements of European Directive 2007/47/EC will apply throughout the European Union. No transitional period is planned. Because uncertainty still prevails concerning the implementation of the new regulations, TÜV SÜD is organizing a road show to inform about the content and consequences of the Directive. First third-party benchmark testing of tires in Japan (21.07.2009)

  1. For the first time, TÜV SÜD has conducted benchmark testing on tires sold on the Japanese market. The aim of this benchmark test was to provide Japanese motorists with a better overview of the quality of standard tires in Japan. The test compared four tire models of four major brands in various performance areas, including braking performance, tread wear, driving comfort and fuel economy.

  1. The European Central Bank (ECB) has been awarded ISO/IEC 20000 certification for excellence in IT service management (ITSM). The ECB’s Directorate General Information Systems underwent comprehensive auditing and assessment by TÜV SÜD before being awarded. ISO/IEC 20000 is a worldwide standard specifically aimed at ITSM. It describes an integrated set of management processes for the effective delivery of IT services to the business and its customers. The ECB is the world's first central bank to attain ISO/IEC 20000. Dr Peter Klein, Chief Financial Officer of TÜV SÜD AG, presented the certificate to Dr Jürgen Stark, Member of the ECB’s Executive Board.

TÜV SÜD certifies LPG gas conversion at Mercedes-Benz (02.06.2009)

  1. TÜV SÜD is acting as expert appraiser in the pilot phase of converting Mercedes vehicle models to liquid petroleum gas, providing assistance and supervision. Designed by Althengstetten-based company GasDrive Technologies GmbH, the premium LPG conversion system is the first on the market to be specifically tailored to Mercedes-Benz vehicles. GasDrive provides conversion services including conversion of Mercedes A, B, C and E class four-cylinder models. In its role as expert appraiser, TÜV SÜD conducted a long-distance test drive in a Mercedes E 200 converted by GasDrive for the purposes of measuring fuel consumption. Under normal driving conditions, the E class vehicle achieved a range of 1650 kilometres.

TÜV SÜD validates pioneer project in India (15.05.2009)

  1. The large-scale replacement of traditional light bulbs with energy-saving light bulbs has been registered for the first time as a project under the Kyoto Protocol. The programme extends over roughly 580,000 households. It was initiated by Osram and validated by TÜV SÜD. The initiative could well serve as an inspiration for a series of further projects and will most certainly also be discussed at Carbon Expo 2009 from 25 to 27 May in Barcelona, where TÜV SÜD's experts can be found at Stand B-041 (Hall 8.1)

Programme of Activities (PoA): Motivation to act on climate change extends to the small scale (15.05.2009)

  1. Solar thermal installations in every household and plentiful micro-hydropower plants: implementation of a large number of small-scale climate-change projects can achieve considerable savings in greenhouse-gas emissions. To underpin this, the Programme of Activities (PoA) has been established under the flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol. The PoA offers initiators the opportunity to generate tradable certified emission reductions (CERs) with the minimum of bureaucracy. TÜV SÜD accompanied several PoAs in Germany, is currently validating projects in Tunisia and Honduras and will report about its field experience at Carbon Expo in Barcelona (25 to 27 May).

First certification of energy-efficient lifts by TÜV SÜD (14.05.2009)

  1. TÜV SÜD has issued the first energy-efficient lift certificate as per VDI Guideline 4707. The energy-efficiency certificate was issued to lifts produced in-house by WITTUR, the lift-component manufacturer.   1. The automotive industry has defined stricter test requirements for the salt spray resistance of running-gear and engine components. In Mannheim, TÜV SÜD now has a new salt-spray chamber which satisfies all requirements and complies with the latest standards. Automotive suppliers will benefit particularly from the cooperation with the Environmental Simulation Centre of Excellence. The tests offered by the Centre of Excellence will also be of interest for other sectors, however.

  1. Unscheduled downtime of a cableway involves loss of income for the owner and damages the image. To prevent downtime and identify defects in the electrical system at an early stage, TÜV SÜD increasingly relies on thermal imaging for the testing and inspection of cableways.   1. The majority of coal-fired power stations are not in line with ever-stricter environmental requirements. Retrofit measures increase power station efficiency and cut carbon dioxide emissions. In addition to the optimization of existing power stations, innovative plant concepts such as concentrating solar power (CSP) plants play a significant role in a resource-efficient energy mix. Prerequisites for this to take place include sustainable planning and production and the safe operation of wind energy and biogas installations or geothermal power plants. From 20 to 24 April 2009, TÜV SÜD's experts will present comprehensive schemes to improve the security of investments, operations and supply of renewable energy sources. This year, for the first time, TÜV SÜD will also be present at the leading trade fair "Wind" in Hall 27, Stand G02.

High-Speed Railway in Turkey Relies on Safety by TÜV SÜD (31.03.2009)

  1. The first high-speed train between Ankara and Eskişehir launches Turkey into the high-speed era. Also on board is TÜV SÜD Rail. On behalf of Turkish State Railways TCDD, the globally active TÜV SÜD subsidiary assessed the complete system, consisting of rolling stock, rail infrastructure and signal engineering.

TÜV SÜD: The time is ripe for e-Mobility (27.03.2009)

Electrically powered vehicles, or EVs, can achieve a faster breakthrough in Germany when backed by a network of existing technologies and infrastructural services, concludes a joint study by TÜV SÜD Auto Service and Munich-based market research institute Technomar. In the study, nine e-mobility scenarios are developed and their potential for realization on the market analysed. As a basis for the study, TÜV SÜD conducted a survey of over 1,800 car drivers on the subject of electrically powered cars. They discovered plentiful interest in the theme: 67 per cent of those surveyed believe that electrically powered vehicles are a useful development. Now the initiators of the study are presenting its contents and goals plus the survey findings in detail at the AMI (Auto Mobil International) exhibition in Leipzig.

Fifteen New Hydrogen Refuelling Stations in 2008, Worldwide (26.03.2009)

  1. In 2008, 15 new hydrogen refuelling stations opened worldwide, increasing the total number to 175. This is the result of an annual assessment by H2stations.org, a website of the hydrogen and fuel-cell internet portal of TÜV SÜD and Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik (LBST). Another 108 refuelling stations are currently in the planning stage.

Close cooperation with Aufwind (23.03.2009)

  1. TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH and Aufwind Engineering GmbH are honing their profiles on the wind energy market. In the course of restructuring, Aufwind will spin off its wind assessment and wind measurement operations to TÜV SÜD Industrie Service with effect from 1 April 2009. Concluding a framework contract, the two companies agreed on close cooperation in the use of wind energy.

TÜV SÜD reports sixth consecutive year of growth in 2008 (15.12.2008)

  1. 850 new jobs and a 7 per cent rise in sales revenues to approximately EUR 1.36 billion. This is the preliminary result of the international service corporation TÜV SÜD for fiscal 2008. ”Our corporate group has thus continued to grow profitably for the sixth year in succession”, notes Chairman of the Board of Management Axel Stepken.

TÜV SÜD plans to double its sales by 2013 (20.12.2007)

  1. International service corporation TÜV SÜD plans to almost double its sales to € 2.3 billion in the coming six years. This corresponds to almost 10 per cent annual growth, which the service provider intends to achieve through organic growth and targeted acquisitions in equal proportions. TÜV SÜD Chairman of the Board of Management Axel Stepken announced these plans to journalists in Munich today.

TÜV SÜD and TÜV NORD remain independent (27.08.2007)
