The challenge of demographic change for accident research
(25.04.2012)One of the challenges on the road to achieving significant reductions in the number of severe injuries and deaths on our roads lies in the incorporation of demographic change into accident research. Prof Stefan Strick, President of the Federal Highway Research Institute (Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen, BASt), emphasized this aspect at the opening of the 2012 crash.tech conference in Munich. In the anniversary year of crash.tech – TÜV SÜD launched the conference series 20 years ago – over 150 experts attending the conference ending today (25 April) focused on the combination of passive and active safety systems and on new challenges in road traffic such as electromobility.

(29.03.2012)Traditionally, making an appointment for having summer tyres fitted becomes more difficult as temperatures rise. Most motorists are having their summer tyres fitted now, even though April may still bring snow and icy roads. Is it advisable to buy summer tyres early because of rising prices as in previous years? No, say TÜV SÜD experts. The prices of summer tyres are relatively stable at present. People who require new tyres would be better advised to take their time and select them carefully. Test results published in well-known specialist magazines offer guidance.

(01.03.2012)Correct tyre pressure has an array of benefits: higher safety, lower fuel consumption and thus lower carbon emissions, and reduced wear – on both tyres and chassis components. Drivers with a tyre pressure monitoring system in their vehicles have these benefits permanently at their fingertips. The systems will be mandatory in all new car models from November 2012. TÜV SÜD offers tips about ensuring correct tyre pressure at all times, even without the aid of this state-of-the-art technology.

(08.02.2012)Electromobility is stepping up to the plate at TÜV SÜD as the technical service company launches a one-year series of extensive tests for all electric vehicles currently on the market. The first aspect of the vehicles to undergo testing is their operating range. In the kickoff to the test process, eight vehicles were immediately confronted with their limits of performance in a trip of almost 50 kilometres through the Alpine foothills at temperatures of minus 13 degrees. The preliminary results showed that all vehicles reached their destination. The series of tests is conducted by TÜV SÜD in partnership with the company Next Generation Mobility (NGM), and is designed to enable TÜV SÜD to determine realistic e-vehicle operating ranges for use in NGM's vehicle fleet software.

(18.08.2011)Power-guzzling heating and air-conditioning systems are a major cause of low range in electric vehicles. Reducing power consumption can add extra kilometres to the range of a vehicle and place its driver at the head of the mobility race. For this reason, the experts at TÜV SÜD Automotive concentrate their attention on individual vehicle components when measuring vehicle range in line with the TÜV SÜD E-Car Cycle (TSECC). Initial results show that power units tailored to the needs of electric vehicles can slash power consumption by up to 15 per cent, adding an average of 15 kilometres to the range of the vehicle. Electric mobility is one of TÜV SÜD's key themes at the IAA, held in Frankfurt am Main from 15 to 25 September 2011.
